If you’re seeking somewhere new to run the slopes this winter, skip Park City and never mind Switzerland. Instead, hop in your private jet and head to Val Thorens in France, officially declared 2014 World’s Best Ski Resort. For two years in a row, the prestigious title of “World’s Best” has been handed down to this resort at The World Ski Awards, otherwise known as the “Oscars” of the luxury travel industry.
Majestically situated in the French Alps, Val Thorens offers over 350 miles of ski runs, 99 percent of which lie above an elevation of 6,500 feet. Rooms and runs offer panoramic views over French, Swiss, and Italian summits. Recently, the resort spent upwards of $50 million in upgrades to its ski lifts and slopes, and added Europe’s highest zip line. Programs have been expanded to offer freestyle, freeride, telemark, splitboard, and even ice diving activities. Another new addition is the Val Thorens Sensations, a modern, 800-bed village affiliated with fashionable Club Med.
All these improvements should provide new and exciting opportunities to visitors during the Nov. 22 through May 10 ski season.
Visitors wishing to top off award-winning skiing with something extra special will find it right on the premises. Val Thorens is hosting two World Cup events this season. Of course, if you can’t make it to France, don’t despair. Park City and Switzerland are still great options — both were also winners at this year’s World Ski Awards.
